Cyber Security for Non-Techies: A Simple Guide for Business Owners

Let’s be honest – cyber security can feel overwhelming when you’re not a tech expert. As a business owner, you know it’s important, but with terms like “endpoint protection,” “zero-trust architecture,” and “multi-factor authentication” being thrown around, it’s hard to know where to start.

We get it. You’re busy running your business, and cyber security feels like another complicated task on your ever-growing to-do list. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a tech wizard to take meaningful steps toward protecting your business.

Start with the Basics

Think of cyber security like protecting your home. You don’t need to be a security expert to know that you should lock your doors and windows. The same principle applies to your business’s digital security. Here are some simple steps to get started:

 1. Use Strong Passwords

  • Make them long (at least 12 characters)
  • Mix letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Don’t use the same password everywhere
  • Consider using a password manager to keep track

 2. Keep Everything Updated

  • Turn on automatic updates where possible
  • Set a monthly reminder to check for updates
  • Don’t ignore those update notifications (yes, we know they’re annoying!)

 3. Back Up Your Data

  • Keep copies of important files
  • Store backups in a different location
  • Test your backups regularly to make sure they work

 4. Train Your Team

  • Share basic security tips with your staff
  • Encourage them to report suspicious emails
  • Make it clear that it’s okay to double-check if something seems odd

Red Flags to Watch For

You don’t need to understand the technical details to spot potential problems. Be wary of:

  • Unexpected urgent requests, especially involving money
  • Emails asking you to “verify” your account details
  • Phone calls claiming to be from Microsoft or your bank
  • Messages that create a sense of panic or rush

When to Seek Professional Help

While these basic steps are important, modern businesses often need more comprehensive protection. Consider getting professional IT support if:

  • You handle sensitive customer data
  • Your business relies heavily on technology
  • You’re worried about meeting regulatory requirements
  • You want peace of mind knowing experts are monitoring your systems
